Kuriniki

Kurinuki is a captivating Japanese pottery technique that has been cherished for centuries. Unlike the more commonly known wheel-thrown pottery, Kurinuki is a hand-building method where the potter carves or “hollows out” a solid block of clay to create the desired form. This technique encourages a deep connection between the artist and the material, allowing for a more intuitive and organic creation process
The beauty of Kurinuki lies in its unpredictability and uniqueness. Each piece is meticulously sculpted by hand, beginning with the interior space and working outward. This approach results in forms that are naturally irregular, with textured surfaces that reveal the marks of the carving process. The individuality of each piece is a hallmark of the Kurinuki technique—no two items are ever the same, each one telling its own story through its distinct shape and feel.
In my studio, I have embraced this ancient technique, and I’m proud to offer a variety of Kurinuki pieces for sale on my website. These items are not only crafted using traditional methods but are also fired using the Raku technique, another time-honored Japanese tradition. Raku firing is known for its spontaneity and the unique, often dramatic effects it produces. During the process, pieces are removed from the kiln while still red-hot and then placed in combustible materials, such as sawdust or straw. This sudden exposure to air and smoke creates stunning, unpredictable patterns and textures on the surface of the pottery, enhancing the natural beauty of the Kurinuki forms.

Trinket box created using the Kurinuki technique. the trinket box was created from a solid lump of clay. The lid was wired off, and the inside hollowed out taking great care to keep the wall thickness even and to not to penetrate the side walls.
Decorated in turquoise and black, the trinket box was fired in the Raku kiln.
The combination of Kurinuki and Raku firing results in one-of-a-kind pieces that capture the essence of Japanese craftsmanship—imperfect yet deeply expressive, with each item bearing the unique marks of its creation. Whether you are a collector of fine pottery or simply someone who appreciates the artistry and history behind handmade objects, these Kurinuki pieces offer a connection to a rich tradition that has been passed down through generations.
By bringing one of these pieces into your home, you are not only acquiring a beautiful object but also becoming part of a larger story—one that celebrates the hands-on, meditative process of creation, the beauty of imperfection, and the deep cultural roots of Japanese pottery. I invite you to explore the Kurinuki collection on my website and discover the unique charm and artistry of these handcrafted pieces. Each item is a testament to the timeless appeal of traditional craftsmanship, offering a touch of history, culture, and artistry that can be cherished for years to come
